Moving to Bengaluru: lift rules, traffic windows and the deposit nobody mentions

We move a lot of households into Bengaluru, and the same three things catch people out every time. None of them are about the movers.

The apartment association, not the landlord

In most Bengaluru apartment complexes, permission to move in is granted by the owners' association, not your landlord, and it comes with rules: a move-in deposit that is often refundable but rarely mentioned upfront, permitted hours, and a requirement that goods lifts be booked in advance. Some complexes forbid moving on Sundays and public holidays entirely. Ask for the move-in rules in writing before you fix a date, because a truck arriving on a day the gate will not open is the most expensive kind of avoidable problem.

Traffic windows are real and they are narrow

On the ORR, Sarjapur Road, Whitefield and Hebbal corridors, the difference between arriving at 7am and 10am can be three hours of crew time you pay for. We schedule Bengaluru loads to start early for exactly this reason. If you are given a choice of arrival slot, take the earliest one.

There are also goods-vehicle restrictions on some central roads during peak hours, which can force a longer route or a shuttle vehicle. A surveyor who knows the city will spot this from your address.

Older buildings and the lift question

Much of Indiranagar, Jayanagar and Malleshwaram is low-rise buildings with either no lift or a passenger lift too small for a wardrobe or a double-door refrigerator. That means carrying, which is a labour line, and it should be priced from the survey rather than discovered on the day. Measure your lift's internal depth if you are unsure — the number that matters is the diagonal.

Two practical notes

• Monsoon: June to September, expect rain during the move. Ask whether cartons will be covered and whether the vehicle body is closed. A tarpaulin over an open truck is not the same thing.
• Water and gas: many buildings are tanker-supplied, and a new gas connection can take a couple of weeks. Start both before you arrive, not after.
